About Us...
In 1963, in a 600 square foot area that was previously a small corner market on Moody Street in Waltham, Technical Publications, Inc. was started by Abraham Spurrell and his partner. A year later Abe’s partner left and his son, Jim, joined his father to help run the company. Together, this father and son team completed every phase of the printing process themselves. Using an old meat freezer as their first darkroom, Abe spent his time shooting negatives and working in the bindery department. Jim did the image assembly, operated the presses and delivered the finished jobs. As the company began to grow, Abe’s wife Pearl and Jim’s wife Diana joined the team. Soon after that they bought their first 25” Heidelberg press.
In 1972, Technical Publications bought a 3,600 square foot building and leased half of it. Within five years, with the addition of a two-color Heidelberg press, cutter and folder, the company expanded into the whole building. Photo typesetting was added and TPI continued to move forward, keeping in step with the new technology.
Technical Publications is continually growing. In 1998 the company moved to its current location, an 8,000 square foot plant, at 45 Calvary Street in Waltham. A four-color Heidelberg press was added at that time and the desktop publishing department was expanded.
Today, TPI remains on the cutting edge. Along with traditional offset services we offer on demand digital printing on a HP Indigo press with variable data capabilities. We also do large format, poster or banner printing in house on our HP Designjet 5500. And, as always, we provide our customers with personal service and quality products.
TPI, after 44 years, is still a family owned and operated business. In 2004, at the age of 80, Abe retired. Jim and Diana, along with their son Daniel Spurrell and daughter Carrie Grove as well as a wonderful staff, handle the day to day operations of the business.
